How to pick the perfect evening gown!

How To Find The Perfect Evening Gown

It's so hard to find the perfect evening gown, but here's a few tips on what to look for! First off, make sure that there are no regulations in your pageant system. (Some have different length requirements, no "leg slit" rules, etc.) Find a dress shape that complements your body. (It's usually best to avoid poofy ball gowns and Cinderella dresses for evening wear competition. A-Line and mermaid gowns are great examples on stage!)Your style and shape of gown should also fit your age division. For example; in the Miss division, ladies should exemplify poise and sophistication. Therefore, long sleeves and deep necklines may portray your maturity and age. While teens are eligible to go for strapless looks and more beadwork. Also, always choose a color that compliments your skin tone; teens should look for brighter colors while Miss contestants may look for bold colors. If you are getting tanned for your pageant, make sure it doesn't fade and think about its impact on your gown. White dresses are gorgeous on stage but make sure that you keep it clean! Have your dress tailored to make sure that you can walk in it. (Hint: Practice on stairs and runways, you never know what will be on stage!) Also, remember to bring safety pins to your pageant and use double-sided tape to make sure your dress stays up and compliments your body style.(Always wear nude/skintone underwear under your evening gown!)Finally, make sure your accessories and shoes match perfectly. A great place to purchase earrings is Crown Couture at gasparcruz.com!  Here are a few examples of gown ideas!

Below left; Chrissy Reynoso, Miss United States Intercontinental 2013. She is wearing a cherry red, long sleeved dress with a deep neckline; a perfect example of a Miss contestant's gown!

To the right, Bella Normand, Miss TEEN Scotland 2013 is wearing a fully beaded, pink gown with silver sequenced straps. The dress shape, straps, and color all fit the teen category!
Hope this helps you find the perfect evening gown! Remember all of the details and if you don't love it when you try it on, you won't love it on stage! Feel confident and beautiful in your dress and show it on stage! Good luck ladies! <3

Appearances Ideas

Appearance #10 for IL!!

I have been working SO hard this summer trying to make as many appearances as possible before leaving for college! I knew that when I won my title I wanted to spread as much cheer and happiness to others as possible with the short amount of time I had left at home, and I made it my mission to do so! 10 appearances in a matter of a month is a pretty big accomplishment, so I wanted to share some of my experiences and hopefully give some ideas to you pageant girls for future appearances! Here are some of my personal favs that I've done in the past month! Enjoy :)

The 4th of July parade in my town was SO much fun! I even got to ride in a vintage convertible which was awesome! It was so humbling hearing all of the kids on the parade route gasping at how a princess had just waved to them. This was definitely an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Another great opportunity that I received was reading to 90 kids at the park district! We talked about 'filling each others buckets' and read some Dr. Seuss books! They were all so sweet and eager to ask me questions! We even got to take silly pictures at the end :) so fun!

One of my favorite appearances thus far was with a local police officer talking to children about DARE and how to prevent bullying! I even got a turn to ride in the squad car and turn the lights and sirens on - I'm so happy that I wasn't hearing or seeing those in my rear view mirror haha :)

The most humbling experience that I have had was meeting this little girl, Julia. It made my day seeing her smile and laugh with us. It truly made me grateful that I am lucky enough to be in good health, and made me realize that doing something as simple as visiting an ill child can make their day go from bad to good. She taught me so many things, and I can't wait to see her again! Get well soon Julia :)
This appearance was one of the best! It was my last appearance before heading of to college, so I aimed to make it the best yet! We had a dance party and talent show with these kiddos - they had me breakin a sweat! It was awesome to see what incredible talents these little kids have!

I can't wait to see what is in store in the winter for my next appearances! I have had so much fun in the last month, and am extremely eager to see what these next 11 months bring!

How To: Get Ready for Rehearsals

How To:

Get Ready for Rehearsals!

Rehearsals make up a large portion of pageant week! Prelims and the final show would not be near as perfect as they are without the hours of rehearsals that are put in. What I have noticed is that there is always the debate of what one should wear to rehearsals. There are some girls that get super dressed up, some girls that wear sweats, and some girls that are in between. Most rehearsals are casual. Although a cocktail dress may look adorable on, it is not necessary for hours of rehearsals. Plus, I am sure it is not the most comfortable thing to wear. On the opposite side of the spectrum, baggy sweats and t-shirts should most likely be avoided. Rehearsals are when you give a first impression to the staff, and possibly even the judges, so make it count! You can make comfortable look cute! Sundresses, jeans and a cute top, the possibilities are endless! But always make sure to bring the shoes that you are planning to wear on stage to rehearsals, you'll be happy that you practiced in them later ;)

IL & NJ having a blast at rehearsals

How To: Make the Most of Your Year as a Titleholder

How To:

Make the Most of Your Year as a Titleholder

Congratulations!! You're officially a titleholder. Wondering what's next? Start here!

Step 1. Tell everyone. At first, I was nervous people would judge me so I didn't tell many people about my new title. Then I realized, why not?! You obviously can't make everyone like or support you, so not everyone will be happy for you. But I promise, there are people that will make you feel special and remind you that this is a huge accomplishment and you should be proud to tell the world. You won this title and you were the best person for the job. Be proud of it!

Step 2. Get involved! Don't wait for people to ask you to participate in events, do it on your own! Call organizations, speak to schools and stores, reach out to people. Don't sit around and wait for events. I wanted to make the most of my year, so I immediately started reaching out to people. I participated in my first parade eight days after receiving my crown. Don't wait!

Step 3. Do things you're passionate about. You have one year with this crown, make the most of your opportunities! I got to go backstage during Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella on Broadway and take a photo with my idol Laura Osnes wearing our crowns. When else would I get to do that?! Call your favorite sports teams, artists and find out what you can do!

Step 4. Get sponsors! You'll be surprised how many people are as excited about your title as you are. I was getting my hair done at my local salon (Hair Salon in Summit, NJ- they're amazing!) and the receptionist had read about my title in the local paper and they hooked me up with a year of free styling! I never would have expected it, so definitely let people know about your title and see what happens!

Step 5. Get good photos taken. Find a photographer you love and have a photoshoot in your crown and sash! You don't need to spend a ton, just make sure you like the photographer and their work. Not only are these photos great for autograph cards, you'll want to have them for publicity and personal purposes. This title is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and you want good pictures to remember this year. Think about it, your kids will see these someday!

Step 6. Be kind to everyone everywhere! People do things for nice people. I love shopping at alice + olivia when I'm in New York City, and love chatting with the employees at the Bryant Park store. I was blown away when they told me they loved how passionate I was about my favorite charity, Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDs and offered to throw me a shopping party to raise money for the charity of my choice! We raised a ton of money, and I'm so grateful. You never know what will come out of chatting with people and being nice to everyone!

Step 7. Ignore the drama and have fun. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Never take it for granted. Be active! Your year will fly by so make the most of it! Remember to stay humble and never let the crown get to your head. You won this title, now it's your chance to show everyone why.

xoxo TTT (NJ)

How To: Prepare for a Pageant

How To:

Prepare for a Pageant

Getting ready for a pageant is an extremely fun and exciting thing, but can also be nerve-wracking and stressful if you are not sure where to start. Luckily, The Tiara Teens are going to help you!

Step 1. Research the pageant system you are interested in entering. For example, if you aren't positive that you have a talent, there are many systems that do not require a talent competition. Same goes with swimsuit, some systems favor a fitness wear competition over a swimsuit portion. See what suits you and enter :)
Step 2. Now that you are entered in the pageant, you need to start preparing! Hiring a pageant coach is a very wise thing to do, especially if you are really wanting that crown! They give you amazing advice and insight on walking, interview questions, and so much more! Also, exercising and eating healthy is a necessity; a toned body always looks amazing on stage!
Step 3. If your system is platform based, make sure you are involved in your chosen platform. Also, choose your talent and practice practice practice! You should also be quizzing yourself on interview questions, and practicing your different walks whenever you have the opportunity!
Step 4. The best part, find your dress! Don't listen to the myth that white dresses always win, because it isn't true! Find the dress that makes YOU feel amazing. If you feel confident in it, you will do 10 times better! Also find your interview outfit, whether it be a suit, or fun outfit. Lastly, make sure you have your swimsuit, based on your system it may be one piece or two piece, so make sure you ask!
Step 5. Days before the competition, make sure you are waxed and tanned! If tanning in a bed is not for you, a spray tan is the way to go! Many believe that a tan is not necessary, but the bright lights on stage will drown you out without one!
Step 6. When packing for the big day, make sure you have everything that you will need, you wouldn't want to forget your butt glue and have your behind slip out in the middle of your swimsuit walk! As a seasoned pageant queen, here are some things that you will need that aren't always told to you!
-a steamer, your dress always finds a way to wrinkle
-extra jewelry (gold and silver)
-BUTT GLUE (hint - works for competition sashes to stay on as well!)
-fake eyelashes (multiple sets!!)
-baby wipes (trying to put on your gown with butt glue still on = not fun)
-vaseline (no ashy legs aloud!)
-safety pins (your dresses always somehow are too big on the day of competition)
-double sided tape
-cute and stylish outfits for every day that you are there!
-when offered to you, get the hair and makeup services, it makes the day much less stressful
Step 7. When pageant day/weekend/week comes, just relax and go into it with confidence and looking to make new friends! It is so much better going into it calm and with a positive attitude than going into it only looking to win. The girls you meet at the pageant are going to be lifelong friends, thats how this all started for The Tiara Teens!
Step 8. If you don't win, be happy for the girl who did! Nothing looks worse than being the girl who has a pout on her face. If you do win, be grateful, not snotty. Pageants are an amazing learning experience, and are what you make of them!
